When it is dark enough, you can see the stars.
- Charles A. Beard
My take: Ok, I’ve been having fun with these lately, but this one actually says a lot, and I think it’s very important to maybe try to plant this little seed of a reminder: I truly believe you can not know how excessively blessed we all are unless you’ve seen adversity. To everyone it is different. What ever your comfort zone, what ever your tolerance…to go beyond and/or below your personal comfort is the only way to experience how comfortable you ARE. In the case of children specifically, they simply can not appreciate that which they acquire with out effort. Our stories of ‘When I was a kid …’ will fall on deaf ears. And not just because the sound of their eyeballs rolling around in their head will drown out the sound of our voice. But because they truly and innocently just don’t know how to relate. So I hope that I can be strong for my daughter and make sure that she learns to appreciate all that she has and gets as well. There is so much to be said for what’s wrong with this world in regards to entitlement and lack of appreciation. But I won’t go there.
As for me, I love a starry night because I’ve seen some dark ones. I love a pristine snow scape because I’ve seen some wastelands. I appreciate the warmth of a cozy fireplace because I’ve been too cold to sleep. Even toes warmed by a measly little space heater is something to be thankful for. I appreciate the existence of Ramen Noodles, 10 lb bags of potatoes and canned chili because well… sometimes you can’t collect enough cans for much more. And there was a time when I was just happy to get RECEPTION on my television. Even if it wasn’t 60 inches of high definition.
So yes, bring on the night. I know it’s cold- but it’s the lack of cloud cover that makes it a beautiful night for star gazing.
