This Week in Politics

Health Care ReformThis week the President was focused on passing the Health Care Reform Act. He appeared on all the important news programs, such as Good Morning America, and world news tonight.

I find it a little confusing so I searched for something to simplify it for us. What I do know as of now the main point of contention is the price. The President wants to pass it so there is $1.6 Trillion dollars to make it work. The Congress does not want to spend more than $1 Trillion, so the costs will need to be hashed out.

So this is a breakdown of what is going on.
The Current Situation
Making sure every American has access to high quality health care is one of the most important challenges of our time. The number of uninsured Americans is growing, premiums are skyrocketing, and more people are being denied coverage every day. A moral imperative by any measure, a
better system is also essential to rebuilding our economy — we want to make health insurance work for people and businesses, not just insurance and drug companies.

The Solution
Reform the health care system:
We will take steps to reform our system by expanding coverage, improving quality, lowering costs, honoring patient choice and holding insurance companies accountable.
Promote scientific and technological advancements:
We are committed to putting responsible science and technological innovation ahead of ideology when it comes to medical research. We believe in the enormous capacity of American ingenuity to find cures for diseases that continue to extinguish too many lives and cause too much suffering
every year.
Improve preventative care:
In order to keep our people healthy and provide more efficient treatment we need to promote smart preventative care, like cancer screenings and better nutrition, and make critical investments in electronic health records, technology that can reduce errors while ensuring privacy and saving lives.
The President also spoke how this effected him personally as his mother struggled to battle Ovarian Cancer, she also had to struggle to pay the health care costs.

So from everything I am hearing on the political talk shows is it will really be passed by the end of the year. I think it is long overdue, and will save money in the end.

This week the President also passed the a program is now called the Car Allowance Rebate System (C.A.R.S.). The program, which President Obama signed into law on Thursday, pays consumers up to $4,500 in credit for trading  in their cars or trucks for those that are more fuel efficient. The law allocates $1 billion for the program. I am sure there is some fine print
to this when you go into a dealer but if you are looking for a new car this may be a big help.

Was2421504 This week as well Michelle Obama kicked off Serve.Gov. It is a program that calls on all of us to help in our communities, be it a food bank or a military family by organizing a care package day when everyone gets together and packs up items the family and soldier may need. You can go to the website http://www.serve.gov/ and find out ways to help in your community. Michelle and President Barack Obama and their children went to Fort McNair Thursday to pack backpacks for children of our servicemen and women.

I posted a funny clip of Barack and Michelle Obama kicking off the day with a speech and telling everyone that afterwards there would be a Luau for everyone. It is funny to watch this short clip as Michelle demonstrates what will be going on in front of her husband who grew up in Hawaii.

I think you will enjoy it.
Until next week,
