Beauty Icon Farrah Fawcett succumbed to her battle with cancer early this morning and has died. She will always be remembered as The poster Girl in the red bathing suit with the big smile and even bigger hair! That hairstyle was copied the world over, and I have to admit, I had the “do” too!!
Farrah first broke onto the scene modeling and then got that Noxema commercial with Joe Namath….remember that?? From there she was cast as one of the original “Charlie’s Angels”, but she only did one season and wanted to move onto bigger and better things. Only she didn’t find the success she wanted, although her roles and acting were good in The Burning Bed and Small Sacrifices, I don’t think anyone ever saw her as anything but a pretty face with a soft voice.
She was married to Lee Majors (the Six Million Dollar Man) and after they divorced, she entered into a 30 year relationship with Ryan O’Neal of Love Story fame. They had a son, Redmond, who has been in more trouble than anyone that age should. Her and Ryan have been on again, and off again for most of their relationship, but when Ryan was diagnosed with lukemia Farrah rushed to his side, and seemed to stay strong together. Then when Ryan was on the upswing with his disease, Farrah was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 2006.
Ryan has been by her side all the time, even supporting her when she decided to go with unconvential methods of treatment to try to cure her cancer. He was prominent in the documentary, “Farrah’s story” that aired on national TV, and he had just recently announced that he had once again asked Farrah to marry him, and this time she said yes!! He joked that he has asked her so many times over the years, and she always says no, that it was a running joke for them, but this time he was serious, and I think Farrah knew it. Only they didn’t get the chance to make it happen. I feel so bad for them.
I feel awful for Ryan, who seemed to live through his own personal “Love Story” only it wasn’t characters in a movie this time, it was real life. He was with her when she passed away this morning just after 9:30 am.
Their son Redmond could not be with his mother when she passed away because he was in prison! How awful!! But the news did report that he spoke to her on the phone and told her how sorry he was for everything. ?? Somehow I don’t think that made up for anything. He will never ever have this time back, and he will have to live with the choices he made, to put him in this situation, so that he could not be there when his Mom would have needed him most!! I hope he cleans up his act now, and makes her proud.
Farrah will be missed…..but an Angel has gone home……
