As a candle maker, I go by the name Candlemamma, and until recently wooden wicked candles have always been too pricey for my budget, so I have never tried a wooden wicked candle. Candlemamma constantly checks her candle suppliers for candle supplies and has found a very nice and unique wooden wick for use in filling container candles. Wooden wicks are very new to the candle business yet are very popular to candle buyers. This wooden wick is a soft wick which has two pieces of wood that makes up the actual wick. Experimenting which can be called testing of these wicks is taking Candlemamma a very long time. She is finding out that as a candle maker she can’t use much fragrance just enough to richly scent the candle. The actual wood wicked container candle will have to be called lightly fragranced. These soft wooden wicks when lightly fragranced will crackle with scent. When I blow the actual candle out yes I do get black smoke but it doesn’t really smell like black smoke it smells more like the soft fragrance of the candle. You should still use a candle snuffer to snuff out all of your candles. This way there won’t be any black smoke left in your house from your candles
Tabbing these wicks is proving difficult and very hard to manage. You will have to use a glue gun or glue tabs to hold them in place.
Testing is proving that these wicks don’t burn black smoke when they burn. These wooden wicks are very good at self trimming, meaning that you won’t have to trim the wicks much. You will still have to keep a close eye on your wooden wicked candles as they burn. This is the case with all candles. I have found that I can take my fingers and pinch the black, unwanted, and used wooded wick to break it off and discard. There is very little mess. Candlemamma isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. She simply washes her hands.
The smaller wooden wicks are proving more difficult to keep lit in soy waxed container candles. When used in paraffin waxed candles these smaller wooden wicks did in deed burn brighter. These wooden wicks which crackle with fragrance seem to burn less hours than the regular cotton core wicks. This is understandable because these wicks are made from wood. Cotton core wicks have been dipped in wax which make them burn longer than these wood wicks which haven’t been pre waxed.
All things considered these wooden wicks do crackle with a light fragrance, don’t set off black smoke, and aren’t real messy to burn, when properly used in a candle. Wooden wicked candles are here, they are the future, and you will see Candlemamma sell wooden wicked candles at her Etsy store.
