Is it a fact that you can mix paraffin and soy wax to make a fragranced candle which burns cleaner and doesn’t set off black or white soot when it is burning, or is this idea fiction?
Does this candle type burn the wax evenly? Does the zinc core or cotton core wick type matter?
These are questions I am going to help you find the answers to.
My testing of soy wax and high fragrance oils is still not finished. I still want a natural soy wax to make all of my triple scented candles. I will tell all candle lovers that if you are worried about your health, I can’t make decisions for you on what type of candle to buy. I can only help to guide you in the right direction.
As a candlemaker, these are my personal test results.
Soy and paraffin wax are both terrific waxes. They serve a purpose to the individual groups who love them differently. Yes it has been said paraffin is made of nasty oils and fatty substances which I will not argue. To the paraffin lovers of the world I will tell you it is easier to handle than the one hundred percent soy wax that I used when making my votive candles. Soy is more angelic in nature to the soy lovers of the universe. Soy can be found in a natural state which is better for your health.
Soy and paraffin wax when mixed together will burn cleaner than straight paraffin wax. I have tested this and found it to be a fact. Cotton core or a zinc core wick does not matter. Both will burn the same in the soy and paraffin wax mixture. There is no black or white soot found around the candle holder when testing my soy and paraffin wax mixture. The only black marks I found were coming from the candles as I extinguished them from blowing them out.
Recently, I have been given a fascinating tip about controlling blemishes on soy votive candles. Blemishes are horrible little bubbles that form around the top of your votive candles when the last re-pour is made too late. I have had a terrible time dealing with them when making my paraffin candles.
Now thanks to a good friend who knows about soy wax and how to deal with these, I don’t have to worry. I can fix these wonderful little pests as they occur. Angie at Candle Junkie on blogger has given me a wonderful tip. Her great tip has really worked for me. Use a hairdryer to fix these soy candle pimples. Angie knows that soy wax is indeed more manageable than straight paraffin when fixing blemishes. She was right! Fill the hole and heat around the blemish, smooth with your finger to fill in the gap. My votive was not perfect. I am sure that Angie has had more practice with soy so her votive candles will look much better. Thank You Candle Junkie for your terrific help.
I have to say as a candlemaker, Soy and paraffin when the two come together it seems to become magic. I have tested these two waxes together and candlemaking will always be a great craft which you can do at home. I am very pleased to say paraffin and soy function together nicely.

[...] Candlemamma has been seriously testing soy candles for high fragrances, the right wax mixture, and now nasty hard to handle votive candles. Testing can be long and dreary. Now thanks to Tartsbymom, who is a lover of soy wax tarts. Candlemamma can have some fun with testing triple scented soy and paraffin waxed votive candles. My testing and the pictures show that there is a wonderful way to fix a votive gone bad, in scented soy and paraffin waxed votive candles. Thanks Candlejunkie and the Fantastic Angels [...]
