Community service is good for you. This isn’t speculation this is fact. Here are a few reasons why you should be serving your community.

* Health Reasons- Community service lowers your blood pressure.
*Networking- If you don’t get out much or even if you do you will meet a lot of new people. Friendship can be discovered or maybe a position at a job is possible.
*Helping another- You are doing something for someone else. This person needs your services. Without you a child’s good grades aren’t possible, an elderly person will have no one to talk to, and a home won’t be built.
*You would want someone to do the same for you- Let’s say you lost your job and everything you own. Where does that leave you? That leaves you homeless. Without volunteers you would not have a hot meal.
*Gain new skills and develop your talents- Do you know how to build a house? How about use pagemaker? Gain resources for a library? I can and have done all of these things through community service.
*Gain job experience to put on your resume- Employers love to see that you are community minded.
*Colleges often look for people who take action and are interested in their community- Those who take action are looked at as leaders.
*Can assist in finding a career interest
*A chance to visit new places- The big thing in serving is volunteer travel. You can build a home in a country that is nothing like your own, you can teach a language to a student, even provide medical assistance if you’re qualified.
*Make the world a better place- Imagine if we all helped each other out.
*Positive energy and hope- My family is working on getting a home through Habitat for Humanity. I can’t go a day without thinking about our new home. I know that through volunteers and my families energy we will get that home. We have hope for the future. Because of volunteerism we will have a home.
*Understanding People- You begin to understand how a person ended up in a situation when you get the opportunity to talk to them. Your stereotypes begin to fade away.
*Your legacy- What do you want your children to remember about you?
*Self improvement- community service gives you a sence of accomplishment. It builds your self-esteem and helps with your self confidence.
Community service can be a random act of kindness or a small favor for a friend. It doesn’t have to take a lot to serve your community. For other ideas on where to serve or ideas you can visit Proof Positivity http://proofpositivity.wordpress.com

I think we should all do more community service.
If everyone did a “little bit” think of all we could accomplish!!
Take care,
Kat
