“Dad Lured Son Home, Then Shot Him”

This is the headline I am confronted with as I peruse online news sources hoping for a Michael Jackson tidbit, or something about Michelle Obama’s new shoes. Violence has been a part of American society for an eternity, but it seems that in recent months people are more apt to act out violently towards their own loved ones. In some cases, it is a result of helplessness and misery over the recent economic crisis that continues to cast a shadow over this great country. People that don’t want to go down alone, opt to take everyone dear with them. Read more…

Those That Have Left

by: Bobbi Langford

angel of death image photo pictureDeath, sooner or later it touches us all. The only time we hear about it is during a terrorist attack, serial killer, a gruesome accident, but mostly when a beloved celebrity passes.

This past week we lost three such celebrities. Do we get major coverage of Ed McMahon or Farrah Fawcett, no. Michael Jackson, the self proclaimed king of pop, has left his shadow on those that passed before. Granted he is a very gifted musician, but does the rest of his strange life warrant all the fuss? Health Care ReformThis week the President was focused on passing the Health Care Reform Act. He appeared on all the important news programs, such as Good Morning America, and world news tonight.

I find it a little confusing so I searched for something to simplify it for us. What I do know as of now the main point of contention is the price. The President wants to pass it so there is $1.6 Trillion dollars to make it work. The Congress does not want to spend more than $1 Trillion, so the costs will need to be hashed out. Read more…

THOUGHTS ON DEATH

by: Bing Yap

death and dying image picture photo“Don’t strew me with roses after I’m dead.
When Death claims the light of my brow,
No flowers of life will cheer me: instead
You may give me my roses now!”
-Thomas F. Healey-

The passing away of two icons of my youth reminded me how fragile life is. These are people I have never met but they were so much a part of my childhood that I feel like I personally know them. I practically grew up with Michael Jackson whose tunes and fashion statement were religiously followed and imitated by my generation. Farrah Fawcett, on the other hand, was the beautiful woman I wanted Read more…

Michael Jackson is Dead at age 50

by: Kat Ritchie

thriller-michael-jacksonThe world has lost a legend today… Michael Jackson was pronounced dead earlier today after being found unconscious and unresponsive at his home. Paramedics tried to revive him with CPR after finding no pulse, but they couldn’t get a pulse back.

He was transported to UCLA Medical Center where they worked on him again to try to regain his heartbeat and a pulse, but they never could revive him or get a pulse.

It is believed that he died of  cardiac arrest.  I’m sure that will either be confirmed or disputed once all the results Read more…

The Inner City

by: Bobbi Langford

urban-decayGuns, blood, death on the mean streets. Urban decay leaves people angry and desperate. Morals decimate as stagnation leads to violence. Blame is passed, but the decay festers on.

Mama’s innocent child barrels headlong in the same cultural demise. Gangs, drugs, and all that goes with it burns out young lives all too soon. A life, like those before, spirals down a wrong chose path toward the reapers open hand.

Urban renewal shoves the decay aside. The anger still resonates Read more…

father_presidentThis Fathers day the President took some time out to recognize the importance of Father’s Day. He opened up to Parade Magazine and this is some of what he shared. “In many ways, I came to understand the importance of fatherhood through
its absence, both in my life and in the lives of others. I came to understand that the hole a man leaves when he abandons his responsibility
to his children is one that no government can fill. We can do everything possible to provide good jobs and good schools and safe streets for our kids, but it will never be enough to fully  make up the difference. That is why we need fathers to step up, Read more…

Loving Kindness Meditation

by: Dolly Loving

meditation_womanWhen I came across this loving kindness meditation I was so filled with peace right away. These past couple of years I was consumed with loss. Family members died, a lot of relationships changed. This put it into perspective for me.

Every time I had loss or a change that was not expected it always brought me fear. I now know I can let go without having to fear, and I will still be ok, I will still be connected to the world and to the ones I need to be.

I hope this helps you feel the Read more…

WHEN ANGER RISES

by: Bing Yap

anger“Anger is momentary madness, so control your passion or it will control you.”
~ Horace~

Rarely do I get angry. And when I do, I try not to stay mad for long. But like anybody else, there are also times when I lose control.

It is undeniably true that a friendship or a relationship which you built over the years can easily be destroyed in a moment of rage. I almost lost a friend of 10 years. Read more…

My Dog Sheds, Does Yours?

by: Kat Ritchie

Well, I just went over to the solutions center and answered a few questions and they gave me a report of what I could possibly do to help Ebony with her itching and constant scratching, and even get rid of the smell.

Off the Wagon

by: E. D. Beale

So, I don’t like to talk about this much, but I have diabetes. Usually, I don’t pay it too much mind. I try to be careful about what I eat and take my medicines when I’m supposed to. It can be a totally manageable problem if you actually do as you’re supposed to.

Unfortunately, I’m not that person right now. I’ve fallen off the wagon.

Lies

by: Bobbi Langford

With a phony grin they lie to your face,
The truth shows no trace of falling into place,
Tears they cry when it all comes apart,
For untruths always leave indelible marks.

Lives veiled in dishonest rants,
Never mired in tyrannical slants,
Yet caught in a lackadaisical hackneyed dance,
Of truths that can only be laid askance.

obama2The highlight of this week with The President and American was the at home terrorist attack.
This is the President’s Statement on the incident.
President Obama:
I am shocked and saddened by the shooting at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. This outrageous act reminds us that we must remain vigilant against anti-Semitism and prejudice in all its forms. No American institution is more important to this effort than the Holocaust Museum, and no act of violence will diminish our determination to honor those who were lost by building a more peaceful and tolerant world. You miss 100 percent of all the shots you never take.

Chastity Bono is going to be a Man

by: Kat Ritchie

chastityThe big news today is that Chastity Bono has decided to become a man, and have the transgender surgery to make the transformation complete.

“He” also wants to be called “Chaz” from now on, and not be referred to as a female any longer.

Now, I know that Chastity has done wonderful things for gay rights, and when she came out it was shocking, but later became more accepted. The wonderful things she has done in speaking out for gay rights and trying to get laws passed is nothing short of amazing.

Happiness is a Journey

by: Colleen Couvillon Gough

shiningHappiness is a journey, not a destination. Think about this for a moment. We have been taught that getting the job, the relationship, the house, or some other want will bring us happiness.

What often happens, once a dream is achieved, is that the happiness we longed to feel is fleeting at best, and then we quickly find ourselves thinking, “What else can I get to make me happy?” This thinking does not serve us. After all, how many times have we read tragic stories about the rich and famous, people who have money galore and every material desire, but still happiness eludes them.

Therefore, the answer is not to stop Read more…

Are Two Eyes Better Than Four?

by: Kat Ritchie

glassesYou bet they are!! And for years and years I have struggled with glasses and contacts and I am seriously thinking of getting LASIK Surgery done to correct my vision, once and for all!!
I have been reading up about the iLASIK procedure and it is affordable, fast and pretty much painless for most people, and it has been proven to be safe and effective.
I have done the calculations, and in the long run, I would save so much money if I have the procedure done, as opposed to constantly buying contacts and solution, and replacing my glasses every time I lose them or break them! Read more…

Deadbeats

by: Bobbi Langford

Rushing rushing everywhere. We rush like rats in a maze. Life is so short yet we chase that almighty dollar right to an early grave. Is it really all worth it.

Yet there are those amongst us that take disability or welfare who are healthy enough to stop living off my dime. This Week in Politics

by: Dolly Loving

buchenwaldThis week the President Barack Obama set out to visit  Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He then traveled to Cairo, Egypt and Paris and Germany. While he was in Germany he placed a flower at a memorial at Buchenwald Nazi concentration camp, a camp where his great uncle helped to free the Jews. When his great uncle returned from his service,  in a state  of shock saying little and isolating himself for months on end from family and friends, he was
alone with the painful memories that would not leave his head.

Next the President spoke at the 65th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy. Read more…
